The al-Qaida-linked extremist group al-Shabab have reportedly released two Cuban doctors abducted in Mandera town in April Last Year.
Bruno Rodríguez, Cuba’s foreign minister, in a social media post confirmed their release and thanked the Somali government for its help. He said he had spoken with Somalia’s foreign minister, Ahmed Isse Awad.
Dr. Assel Herrera and Dr. Landy Rodriguez, were held by the militants for a year and a half in the vicinity of El-Adde town, in Gedo region, Somalia
The doctors were kidnapped in Mandera County as they were going to work in April 2019, killing one of their police bodyguards. The orthopedic surgeon and physician had been deployed to Kenya in 2018.
