Second wave of desert locust invade Kitui county

2021 has started with foreseen and unforseen challenges in Kitui County. With good rains experienced in most parts of the county, most farmers are panicking as a huge swarm of locusts has invaded the agricultural depended county.

The destructive second swarm of locusts are already ravaging crops in Mutha and Kanziko wards of Kitui south. Mutha Ward has been greatly affected of the two with the locusts destroying crops in Musenge, Ithambanzou, Kyangoto, Katene, Winyunyi, Kyusini, Sikwata, Ndakani and Kivandini villages. thecitizeneye.com has also received reports that Ketunda and Kyanyaa villages in Kanziko Ward are affected by this menace.

After the locusts were spotted in the county, the CS for Agriculture Hon Peter Munya was immediately contacted. It was a relief to Kitui farmers as the CS responded promptly. He directed officers in Plant Protection Services (PPS) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to asses the situation and mount the necessary measures to control the invasion.

Dr Wathe Nzau the Deputy Governor of Kitui County was tasked with coordinating the entire technical team comprising of National and County officials in combating the scary second invasion.

Dr Wathe Nzau has been lauded for his swift administrative skills and hands on approach when dealing with county matters. With him in charge, most Kitui residents are hopeful that the locusts will be eliminated once and for all from Kitui County.

The technical team from the national government is expected to start spraying the locusts using motorized pumps mounted on vehicles. They will be under the supervision of the Deputy Governor.
